The Hiding Place

By Trezza Azzopardi

A very interesting tale of a family of six girls and the trials and tribulations that they experience. What is so interesting about this story is the way that the author sets it up. Each chapter is separated into little scenes that are broken up. The scenes are memories from the past that the girls are remembering or instances that are occurring in the present day. What makes this set up so interesting is that the memories from the past are from different times in the past. So it might be a memory when a girl was six, intermixed with a memory of how her parents met, and then followed by a memory of her life six months ago. The present setting of the story is when the girls are all grown up age thirty-five to fifty and they are gathered for their mother’s funeral. The girls have not kept in contact so they do not know what or who to expect. I felt the story was expressed well; the way the author sets up the tale makes it particularly engaging. This would be a great read for those who love fiction that is especially about the interactions of families (husband and wife, siblings, parent to sibling).
