The story of a plain looking governess who falls in love with her employer. She then plans a small wedding that is interrupted. The gist of the interruption is he has been married and is still currently married to a woman who is mad and is hidden above in the attic. The governess feels lied to and betrayed and she leaves in the middle of the night on an adventure with no money, no food, no clothes or worldly goods. The story has supernatural elements to it and is an extremely clever book. It is full of unique characters that are memorable and a surprising plot line.
