-pgs: 471

The tale of Marius and his experiences as a vampire from when he was first created to when the Queen of the Damned is killed. Rice does an excellent job of placing Marius in the important events that occurred in Rome, Constantinople and America from the 900s onward. One sees Marius not as a monster from his tales but as a human who is living with unforeseen circumstances. One also clearly experiences the pain Marius has felt during different situations in his life and one clearly sees how this pain has affected him and made him who he is current day in these novels. This tale is nice because you see Marius’s side of events which adds to the stories of Pandora and Lestat. Rice does an excellent job of keeping the tempo of this story consistent allowing the reader to enjoy it, understand it and finish it in a timely manner. If you enjoy the Vampire Chronicles, then this is a must read.

Although I have not read all of the Vampire Chronicle books, I decided to pick this one up to peruse. I was particularly happy with the beginning when the first person narrator stated that it was not necessary to read all of the books to understand the point of this story. However, I felt the story line was a little too contrived or forced. The interaction between the characters was not well connived or explained. It was not built enough to be understandable. I found one of the main characters Mona to be highly annoying and her motivation for her character was a little unclear especially in her relationship with Quinn. The story line could have been better thought out and not so forced. I really felt like I was watching a badly written and directed soap opera. If you are a fan of these stories, I would recommend reading it; otherwise, do not waste your time.

An interesting novel that is very different from others I have read by this author. This story centers on a young boy who is the heir to his father’s position in Italian society over his older brother who has disgraced his father. When the old man dies, the older brother comes back and secretly makes his brother a eunuch. I found this novel very education in explaining eunuchs, their place in society and how they were treated. It was interesting to see how the young boy progressed with his life now that he had been maimed. The main question throughout the story was whether or not he would exact his revenge. An interesting and informative read not for the squeamish.
