This is the story of a slave family before and after the civil war that has faced many hardships. The main story is about the mother Sethe and her life on the slave farm Sweet Home. The main focus is her escape from slavery on this farm with her four children. The story climaxes at the scene when Sethe attempts to kill her children instead of seeing them recaptured. She succeeds in killing one child a girl who through some supernatural event visits her mother as a grown woman and forces her to pay for her sins. This was an interesting story that at times was very lethargic but it was very unique.
