By Arthur Miller

-pgs: 145

An excellent play full of deep, foreboding questions on human nature. In order to read and understand the play, one must first have some background on the Puritans: their beliefs, history, customs and language. Once you have completed the reading, definitely read Miller’s article on why he wrote this play. His reasons are very interesting. In addition, look at how this play is an allegory for McCarthyism. There are some truly memorable characters in this play Abigail Williams (the villain with out a conscience), John Proctor (the repentant sinner who cannot forgive himself) and Elizabeth Proctor (the true victim). It is also great for the classroom.
