By Sue Monk Kidd

-pgs: 335

An interesting novel that is similar to Bees in the aspect of the main character (a female who is searching and ultimately finds her identity). This story involves a mystery surrounding the death of Lily’s father and why her mother is behaving in a certain manner. In addition, the twist at the end of the story is not expected but helps to tie the entire story together. As in her previous novel, the characters are very interesting and unique. Also, the setting she creates and her description of it is vivid and clear. A well written book that was easy to read and that gave me a new appreciation for legends that towns have.

The Secret Life of Bees

By Sue Monk Kidd

-pgs: 302

The story centers a round Lily Owen and her search for an explanation about her mother’s death. The subject is not something she can broach with her father but she does have certain reflections of the day that disturb her greatly. When her stand in mom (a black woman), gets in trouble for insulting three racists, she frees her and they take off on an adventure. Lily ends up in a house of all women where she learns about the female spirit and reconnects with her mother. Throughout the story, the author uses the life of bees to explain what is occurring in the story. Very well written and I would highly recommend if for girls.
