A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

A really difficult read. The beginning of the novel is the childhood story of Stephen Dedalus and it is very easy to read and to understand. The rest of the novel is basically a work on philosophy and religion. It is difficult to understand and very uninteresting. The novel jumps around in Dedalus’s life and at times does not add up to the information you have on him. For instance, you miss a large portion of his life from high school to when he decides to go to college. It is a very introspective novel and its one redeeming quality is his love interest. Otherwise, it is an unsatisfying read.
