-pgs: 382

This is a first for me. I tried to read this book and was unsuccessful. Since I am a prolific reader, I was greatly surprised by my failing. I have forced myself to read many stories that I have not felt connected to. However, in this case, I read one chapter and had no idea about what I had just read. So, I looked up the information on the internet. I then read a second chapter and was still unsuccessfully. I checked the internet again and began a third chapter and realized that this was silly. There are just some books that are difficult and this for me is one. Maybe when I have aged a couple of years, I will attempt to read this book again and have a different experience. I will just have to see.

An excellent novel about the story of one family particularly a father, daughter and aunt who are well off. The father has the aunt come live with him after his wife dies and the aunt becomes a widow. He then believes that his sister will eventually create an over romantic drama for his daughter, which does happen with Morris Townsend. He is a money hungry con artist who convinces the daughter to marry him. The father intercedes and refuses the arrangement and informs Morris that if they do marry he will cut her out of his will. Morris has his fiancé try to convince the father different but it does not work. The story has an interesting twist and is very well written and enjoyable to read.

By Henry James

- pgs: 197

First serious piece of fiction written by Henry James. This story is a slight disappointment because he does not fully develop the plot line. It is hard to understand the main character, Roger’s, point of view toward his young ward. The ending is not very clear but it allows the reader to us their imagination to figure out the end. An easy read. However, it borders on boring and is easy to understand. You can also say it is slightly predictable. All in all a good use of language and a good first novel from an excellent author. It would be interesting to map his progress and his development in plot / details.
