By John Irving

-pgs: 824

A wonderful story that spans the life of a boy from four to forty. It covers the concept of our perception versus our true reality. This is the story of Jack who is abandoned by his father as a youngster and who as he gets older has continuous problems with his mother. In addition, he has relationship problems. The journey begins with his mom and him chasing after his father or so he perceives at the age of four. They travel to all different countries and have interesting adventures there with the tattoo world and others. I really enjoyed this story especially the thought that went into the plot that continuously kept the reader interested and entertained. Definitely, a masterpiece that would be enjoyed by all. A lot of thought went into the characters! Well-written.

The Fourth Hand

By John Irving

-pgs: 316

This novel follows John Irving’s usually plot formula: complex and covers many years. In addition, the plot of the story centers a round a hand transplant for a highly important newsman and the widow of the man who supplied the hand. Irving also covers and explains the background of several other people in this story. This is an unusual love story with highly unique and remarkable characters. A quick read that was easy to follow. Not as great as Irving’s other novels but it is entertaining and keeps your attention.

A Widow for One Year

By John Irving

-pgs: 592

What a master writer! Not only does John Irving show you the growth of a character from an adolescent to an adult. He shows you the growth of all the characters around them. In addition, the connections he develops between people are so complete and coherent that it leaves no room for questions. My only complaint about this novel is the title. Although it does make sense, it is not a good representation of the content of the book and is definitely not eye catching. The novel centers a round Ruth Cole and events that have happened to her from the age of four to forty. It also includes things that occurred to people around her prior to this time. A well written novel that uses many details.
