By Theodore Dreiser

-pgs: 409

The plot of the story centers a round the 1900’s in Chicago and New York. There Carrie a young girl looks for work and is seduced by Dreuet (a traveling salesman). He convinces her to move to a new place with him and later to live with him as his “wife”. He promises marriage but never delivers and she runs off with an acquaintance of his by accident. She then lives with him until poverty and then becomes a famous actress. One feels sympathy for Carrie because of her naivety and innocence. She is seduced and controlled by many and seems only concerned with materialistic things. She is a complex character which is great for analysis. The novel is a little rambling; the author spends too much time explaining and analyzing the society and historical time period.
