By Louis De Bernieres

-pgs: 331
The sequel to The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts. This story centers on Dionisio Vivo and his fight against the main coca lord El Jerarca in his town. Vivo becomes a celebrity throughout his country and folk lore develops about him. Like the previous novel, this story is highly amusing with memorable plot twists as well as characters. De Bernieres has an excellent sense of humor that shines forth in his fiction and in this particular novel. I found this story even easier to read then his first one and really enjoyed the multitude of tales it contained. I really enjoy reading a variety of fiction and would recommend this group of novels to anyone who wants to read something different.

My mother has been harassing me to read these stories (it is a series of three) ever since I gave her Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s 100 Years of Solitude to read. She was completely taken in with the author’s entertaining stories and excellent use of magical realism. After the finishing the first one, I can see that my mother was correct. This tale is highly amusing with many memorable characters who all intersect eventually. The plots of the different tales are also amusing and memorable. The only criticism I have of this book is that it is often difficult to keep all of the characters straight in one’s mind because De Bernieres does employ many. Each chapter of this story is like a vignette so it is easy to read a couple and then go do something else. I would definitely recommend this story to anyone who loves fiction.
